I had almost no understanding that this is what Jesus wanted from me. I would have whole heartedly affirmed that Jesus wants me to be of very high reputation. If he had done this it would have been a major stumbling block to the poor. It would have prevented so many millions from coming to him.
It means to fashion my life in such a way as to make the lowliest comfortable with approaching me. The characteristic that Pastor Gayle called As the Younger was also very impactful for me.
To be a person who seeks first his own flies in the very face of all that Jesus was. To trust not in the fruits of greed, which is just more stuff.
I love this aspect as obedience to it will make us flexible enough to go wherever he wants to use us! We learned in this portion of the curriculum that each individual member of the body exists not for its self. It exists to serve every other member of the body. If any part of the body were to stop serving the others and seek only to serve itself the entire body would be severely cripple and would most likely die unless that part of the body is either cut off or returns to a servant, instead of a consumer, mentality.
It is a cancer and unless it stops being cancerous or is surgically which is usually also painfully removed. I have seen this lived out here at Gospel for Asia when Donor Services is behind on processing checks, we in the call center, who have no concept of how to do this, get 5 min.
We, by the grace of God, were able to help them get caught up. We the call center were not cancerous but, properly, we took our role as a body seriously and served the other members of the body. After softening my heart toward God I see that for me to apply these things, for me to become more others-centered I will need to change the way that I live in the apartment and the way that I speak to my brothers and sisters. This book deconstructs hurtful and worldly leadership styles, while simultaneously keeping the focus on the alternative rather than deteriorating into a cynical bitch fest about the current state of things. Here is a better question, do we dare not to model ourselves after Jesus? Jesus calls us to follow His example, which is radically different and contrary to what we are used to. Gayle does a masterful job of drawing out deep heart issues and practical life issues to challenge us.
